The Cottage

Smugglers Rest is a traditional granite Cornish fisherman’s cottage built about 1850, located in the heart of Sennen Cove, just a couple of minutes from the beach, the pub and all the village facilities. The cottage, being some 15 steps up and about 20 metres back from the lane, provides both privacy and sweeping sea views across the cove from all rooms.

The cottage has ‘fibre to the door’ internet and is equipped with a smart TV (with catchup and Netflix) along with DVD’s and books in the living room, there is an Amazon Echo (Alexa) in the kitchen area for radio and music, and a good supply of games and beach stuff.

The cottage is non-smoking, and regrettably not suitable for disabled as access is up 15 steps either from the front or side lanes.

Downstairs

The downstairs reception area is open plan, centred on the kitchen, with all the windows facing out to the sea. To one side is the dining area with French windows (opening onto the outside dining area), to the other side of the kitchen area is the front door (opening onto the sun terrace) and staircase. Beyond the staircase is the living room area with a sofa and four arm chairs grouped around a coffee table and facing the wood burner stove.

The very well equipped kitchen is centred around a Rayburn/Aga gas stove, with an additional full size electric hob/oven, ‘Belfast’ sink, dishwasher, free standing fridge/freezer, microwave etc. with a central butchers block and a double chest seat under the window. There is a washer/drier which is located in the garden shed.

Upstairs

The cottage provides accommodation for six guests in a king size double, with a chest of drawers and mirror, and two twin bedrooms, each having a built-in wardrobe with shelves.

All the bedrooms have vaulted ceilings and sash windows overlooking the bay. There is a bathroom upstairs (bath, basin and W.C.) and a shower room downstairs (shower, basin and W.C.). All linen is provided along with bath sheet, hand and beach towels.

Outside

Outside there is a sun terrace with deckchairs, an outside dining table overlooking the sweeping sandy bay with extensive views from the fishing harbour out over the sea to Cape Cornwall.

Behind the cottage, up some 25 steps, is a summer hut with a sofa and easy chairs providing the ideal secluded spot to look out over the cottage and survey the whole Cove, while enjoying a glass of wine, or to study/work using the hardwired WiFi connection.

Just below the summer hut is a garden shed with a combined washer/drier and a table football table.

Sennen Cove

Sennen Cove is a small village a mile from Land’s End, with a small harbour and lifeboat station. There is a long wide beach of golden sand with top rate surfing conditions (with 3 surf schools) and safe bathing within flagged areas. Both Sennen beach, and neighbouring Gwynver at the northern end of the bay., are watched over by the RNLI. Dogs are banned on the Sennen beach from 15th May to 30th September from 10am – 6pm (2021), dogs are however permitted on Gwynver beach at any time.

Sennen Cove is well provided for with a pub, fish & chips, café, ice cream parlour, local shop, restaurant and art gallery, with a post office up the hill in Sennen (follow the tab to Location / Village Facilities for details). The SW Coastal Path passes through the village offering lovely coastal walks to Cape Cornwall in the north or past Land’s End and on to several lovely pubs around the coast.

The Cove is only 7 miles from Penzance with its main line rail station, cinema, shops, restaurants etc. Also nearby are many tourist attractions, Minack Theatre, Mousehole, Land’s End, Boat Trips, St Michael’s Mount, Tin Mines etc.(follow the tab to Local Attractions for details). There are some very good pubs and restaurants in the local villages.

Winter Walks

Smugglers Rest also provides a wonderful base for winter walks along the coast or if stormy weather inland walks to local pubs. Winter storms are a sight to be seen as the waves crash over the harbour wall or drive into and sometimes over the nearby cliffs.

Whilst snow is very unusual the cottage will remain snug with the Rayburn and underfloor heating in the downstairs living area, radiators in the bedrooms and towel rail in the bath/shower rooms. For that really snug feeling there is a wood burning stove to provide added warmth and atmosphere.
